It proved a difficult opening National Trophy fixture for the Mildenhall Fen Tigers as another injury marred their start to the 2019 campaign.

Already operating rider replacement for Sam Bebee, a first heat fall from Charlie Brooks saw the young racer injure his shoulder and although he bravely rode in his next two races had to withdraw from the meeting. With David Wallinger experiencing a very difficult evening it was left to three riders to keep the Fen Tigers in with a shout of a point. Captain Danny Ayres, an Isle of Wight specialist lead from the front reeling off five wins in his six rides, his only defeat coming in heat one when his opposite number Georgie Wood beat him. He received solid support from Jason Edwards with ten points and reserve Macauley Leek who continued his fine start to the season with a paid eleven return from his six rides. The final score was Isle of Wight 49 Mildenhall 40.

Speaking after the meeting a slightly subdued Malcolm Vasey said “I was a ittle disappointed by tonight’s result, although we experienced some more bad fortune with Charlie Brooks injury and David Wallinger’s inexplicable evening. Danny Ayres was superb and I was particularly impressed by Macauley Leek again tonight who is showing the ability to be a potent weapon at  eserve. Sadly, Charlie will miss tomorrow and most likely Sunday as well, so we have been straight onto a number of riders, but as always getting a guest to go to Plymouth at short notice is not easy. We are very grateful to Chad Wirtzfeld for agreeing to ride tomorrow, Chad impressed tonight with a fine paid nine return and has done plenty of laps around Plymouth.

With Danny missing tomorrow (Anders Rowe guests) as well our task is a difficult one but the lads are determined to put things right and I am hopeful of bringing back something from Plymouth”
